Cocinillas Madrid : An Honest Review
Small cozy comfort, in the heart of Malasaña – El Cocinillas Restaurant
El Cocinillas is a piece of home, away from home. The big smile that welcomes you as soon as you enter gives you a strong hint, that you entered the right place at the right time.
Firstly, this very small and elegant restaurant could not be any more central. Just next to the Tribunal metro stop and the ever-so-crowded calle Fuencarral, el Cocinillas actually seats in a very quiet street. Ironically calle San Joaquin, is slightly off the beaten track. It is a very short narrow street, and just next to it there is a more lively one that gets to the same Plaza San Ildenfonso.
Well all this long paragraph basically to say that it’s relaxing to dine in a calm street right in the middle of one of the most hectic spots of Madrid.
As I mentioned before, the focus on the service is clear. Nothing is belated and there is a high number of waiters for the limited amount of tables.
The menu is very international, ranging from Couscous with chicken, down to italian burratas with a twist and of course many revisited huge spanish classics.

The presentation is gorgeous and the overall culinary timing is very accurate, with caring waiters that are there to assist you without being excessively present.
We decided to go for the Berenjena asada con mozzarella ahumada al gratén and the Huevos de corral estrellados con tomates deshidratados, parmigiano y aroma de tartufo. 2 very interesting starters with a strong character and tasty surprise. The first is an Eggplant starter with smoked mozzarella melted all around it, interesting explosion!
The Huevos de Corral, grass-fed eggs on dried tomatoes were also an interesting journey. Covered by a mountain (ok maybe just a hill) of fresh parmersan shavings. It did have an impact. Delicious too by the way.
I ended our journey with a Tajine de pollo con limón confitado y aceitunas, Tajine with chicken, lemon confit and olives. Soft, juicy and delicious. It could have arrived a tiny bit warmer, but my bad, I could have also asked to reheat it a bit…
Interesting wine selection and the desserts are very very satisfactory. It is very affordable despite the sophisticated look, with a glass of wine you should consider 17-23€ each.
Thumbs up, check it out!
